Skin Care

The fundamentals of basic skin care starts at home. These include

1. Cleansers

A good cleanser will have an immediate and noticeable effect on the skin and is defined by its pH. There is no one size fits all cleanser and as the rule of thumb, the more alkaline a product (like soap), the more drying it is to the skin as normal skin pH is around 4.5-6.5.

2. Moisturizers

Two categories of moisturizers exist – humectants (which penetrate the skin and increase the water content of the stratum corneum), and occlusive (which do not attract water but are more likely to seal in the water already available in the stratum corneum). The best moisturisers are a combination of both.

2. Sunscreens

Sunscreens fall into two categories – chemical and physical. This is perhaps the most important component of fundamental skin care as sun damage not only causes photoageing but high rates of skin cancer. Additionally, many of the other components in skin care (eg. AHA’s, Vitamin A) will increase your risk of skin damage. Sunscreen MUST be worn routinely as part of your skin care either as a separate step, or incorporated in your moisturiser.

4. Cosmeceuticals

These are substances that fall between a drug (intended to affect the structure and function of the body) and a cosmetic (intended for beautifying). The term was coined by Dr Albert Kligman in 1980 who realised that the definitions of drug and cosmetic had some overlap and there were substances that did more than decorate but less than medicate. While even water can have effect on barrier function of the skin, effectively the term cosmeceuticals differentiates more active from less active substances like cleansers and moisturisers. Cosmeceuticals include Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAS). Vitamin C and Retinols which have scientifically proven effects but are not prescriptives.

5. Prescriptives

These are substances are used to influence biological processes in the skin and include Retin-A (tretinoin) which increases cell turnover and Hydroquinone which reduces the production of melanin. These substances may only be available on prescription but form an important part of skin care in the ageing face.
Additionally, consider incorporating a weekly face mask or treatment specifically designed for your skin concerns. Masks can provide deep hydration, detoxification, or additional exfoliation.

Remember to patch test new products before applying them to your entire face and neck, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies. Also, be consistent with your skincare routine and give it time to see results.
